Swiss Expat Story: Tobias in Whistler, Canada
by MySwissWorld & Swiss Food Box Team
We welcome you to our newest interview in our weekly series. Here we interview each week somebody from the community and learn a bit more about their lives.
This week, Tobias, living in Whistler, Canada 🇨🇦, tell us about his life in a skiing resort in Canada. Thank you very much for participating, Tobias! Your boxes containing Rösti, Ovo Crunchy and Le Parfait have left just yesterday. 😀
What is your name and where are you living now?
My name is Tobias Lonfat. I live in Whistler, BC Canada. I work at the ski resort as a Ski lift mechanic.
What is your connection to Switzerland? Have you been born there, or do you have some roots in Switzerland?
I was born in Martigny,Valais. I lived there until I was 20 then moved to Whistler for a summer to learn English. That summer I met my wife, she is Australian and it made sense to stay in Whistler as we are half way in between our families.
What is the thing that you miss about Switzerland the most?
What I miss the most about home, is the culture and the food. The public transport and accessibility to a variety of different resorts, food and culture. And of course my family 🙂
What do you think is better or do you like more in your new country?
What I like in Canada is the relaxed way of living and the amount of snow we get every year in whistler. We average 12m with a snow base that reaches 3m.
Do you have any plans of returning soon? For vacations or permanently.
I will return to Switzerland as holiday in August 2023. We try to alternate between Switzerland and Australia every year if possible.
