Swiss Expat Story: Daniele in Lincoln, UK
von MySwissWorld & Swiss Food Box Team
We welcome you to our newest interview in our weekly series. Here we interview each week somebody from the community and learn a bit more about their lives. This week, Daniele tells us more about his life in the United Kingdom. 🇬🇧
Daniele Pantano, a poet, essayist, literary translator, and Associate Professor in Creative Writing at the University of Lincoln, talks about his connection to Switzerland and what he misses most about his home country. Despite being born in Langenthal, Canton of Bern and completing his primary and secondary school years there, Daniele left Switzerland at age seventeen to pursue a life in poetry and the arts. While he appreciates the Brits' sense of humor and the slightly better washing up liquid in the UK, Daniele often visits Switzerland to visit family and give readings. 😀
What is your name and where are you living now?
My name is Daniele Pantano, and I currently live in Lincoln, UK. I am a poet, essayist, literary translator, and Associate Professor in Creative Writing at the University of Lincoln.
What is your connection to Switzerland? Have you been born there, or do you have some roots in Switzerland?
I was born in Langenthal, Canton of Bern, and completed my primary and secondary school years there. At age seventeen, I left Switzerland to pursue a life in poetry and the arts.
What is the thing that you miss about Switzerland the most?
I miss the air, food, punctuality, attention to detail, and, perhaps most of all, the beautiful landscapes.
What do you think is better or do you like more in your new country?
I believe the Brits have a better sense of humour, and the washing up liquid is slightly better here in the UK. I'm sure there's more, but I can't really think of anything else right now.
Do you have any plans of returning soon? For vacations or permanently.
I often visit Switzerland to visit family or give readings––any excuse, really, to visit home.
